After the Trade

By the mid-18th century, the economy in furs was a centuries-long tradition among Native people. Goods like cloth and fabric, brass kettles and guns were simply a part of everyday life. The trading posts can be viewed as a store where a person buys things that they do not make for themselves. Native consumers were savvy and shrewd when it came to quality and cost. Traders who peddled inferior goods often found themselves without customers, out of business, or worse.
