View from The Castle

During the construction of the Castle at Fort Niagara in 1726, the Iroquois were told it was a trading house that would benefit both the French and the Indians. But its real intention became clear when they discovered the five-foot-thick walls. From that point on, relations were poor as the building represented a source of power during both French and English occupations. As this warrior looks out over Lake Ontario from the white man’s mighty fortress, he sees the futility of it all, and the passing of a way of life.
