The Bark Cutters
Woodland Indians gathered the bark of the white birch tree for their own use, and as a valuable item for trade with other tribes. The bark served many purposes. In addition to making canoes, it could be used for containers and a variety of other functional and decorative items. Birchbark could be gathered and stored for long periods of time, and then soaked and made pliable again when needed.
