The history of a nation's treaties was kept within the symbolic language of the wampum belt. The belts were painstakingly woven out of beads made from the shells of freshwater clams. These belts were very important to the tribes and were given for safekeeping only to the most trusted statesmen, who would often wear the belts around their necks at important ceremonies.
